over 30 attendances to the joint-meeting of Shanghai No.1 TMC and CAT!

As the General Evaluator, I’d like to share with you the following:

The meeting was well organized:

thanks for the EVP of Shanghai No.1 , Jasmine and Asst. EVP of CAT Susan (me, our EVP, Emily, is not in town). The key to success is to plan and communicate with role-takers earlier (1-2 weeks before the meeting)

Snacks and Water (hot water in cold day is extremly welcomed) are ready, well done!

The role takers are experienced and well prepared, expecially:

TMC, Alice, is humorous as usual

I think the highlight of the evening is Yingdan’s training on Speech Contest

video of 2000 world Champion, Ed Tate, it’s very convicing and vivid

3 winning points: Message (inspirational), Connection (with the audience), and Stage Performance

practice by LOVE (Learn, Observe, Visualize, Exceed the limit)

it would attract immediate and strong interest if Yingdan could tell us why we should attend the contest in the opening

The only thing I hope we can improve is the speech evaluation. While we CAT members are proud of our critical thinking and frankly opened opinion on the speech evaluation, I do think it would be more motivated if we can:

point out the advantages of the speaker and the speech first because the speaker will know which skills he/she has already possessed;

focus on speaking skills instead of content

provide suggestions or Demo to show how to improve

All in all, I enjoy the meeting.

It can be hard work to deliver a presentation that is smooth, insightful and ends right on time. One of the speakers who really seems to get it right is Malcolm Gladwell. If you have ever watched him speak (like here on TED), you may notice that he speaks eloquently, even effortlessly, and ends with precise punctuality.

But when asked about it once, Gladwell replied, “I know it may not look like this. But it’s all scripted. I write down every word and then I learn it off by heart. I do that with all my talks and I’ve got lots of them.”

It’s great to connect with your audience as if you were just having a casual chat with them. And sometimes that’s precisely what you will want to do. Other times, when you want to really nail it, you might be better off going beyond the bullet points to rehearse, refine and distill the most important information that you are there to share. And find yourself on a level where you have that polish that casual (amateur?) speaking just doesn’t allow.

While memorizing isn’t “the answer”, if you want to deliver a professional-standard speech, you might find yourself enjoying an interesting experience if you treat your next presentation as a performance.

At least that what seems to work for the guy who wrote The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers and, most recently, What the Dog Saw.

CAT had a great meeting last night – great new venue, lots of guests, the most entertaining grammarian report ever, three people honored for achieving a new TM educational award, a DTM created… we’re exciting to be starting 2010 with lots of positive energy!

My question for you is – what can CAT help YOU with this year?

Is your goal to get another 10 speeches down? Do you want to compete in the international speech contest? Become a better trainer? Complete your DTM? Put on a TM event?

Do you want to train on a specific topic? Or give a speech to an advanced group to receive a bit tougher evaluation?

Please let us know! CAT can provide support in many ways!

We’re looking forward to 2010!
